This Austin-based company was started by David and Christinane Erwin in 2006. When the couple was remodeling their 1951 cottage, they couldn’t find a period appropriate front door. They made a replica by measuring one of their neighbor’s doors – Their effort was successfully turned into a business. Their product line is based on through research to represent authentic mid century modern design.

Crestview Doors also offer sidelights and transoms to compliment your Doorlight kit order. Sidelights and transoms are either “sash,” meaning that the glass has been installed into a unit that matches the door and installs much like a stationary door or is attached to the entire entry system to comprise a single unit, or they are “direct-set,” meaning that the glass is installed into a frame made of jamb material and is installed directly between two studs. Most mid century modern homes have direct-set sidelights.

The 3rd Annual San Francisco 20th Century Modernism Show & Sale (SF20) will be held on September 17-19, 2010 at Festival Pavilion, Fort Mason Center. The event will kick off with a Preview Gala from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, September 16, benefiting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). Proceeds from the Preview Gala will benefit the museum’s education and exhibition programs that engage residents of the Bay Area, including over 55,000 children, teachers, and families, each year.

This year’s SF20 will feature 45 national and international modernism exhibitors presenting a wide variety of high quality 20th Century furnishings, decorative arts, fine arts and objects. George Nelson Block Clock by Vitra

The very first clock created by George Nelson (with collaboration of other designers, aka “George Nelson Associates”) was “Clock 4755” (Ball Clock) for Howard Miller Clock Company in 1947. Howard Miller Clock Company was established in 1926 by Howard C. Miller in Zeeland, Michigan. The company focused on manufacturing chiming wall and mantel clocks in the early years. During the 1940s and 1950s, the company ventured into more aesthetic designs to incorporate postwar modernism trend. The company then reverted to more traditional designs like grandfather clocks in the 1960s and eventually became known as the largest grandfather clock manufacturer in the world.

George Nelson Associates designed approximately 150 clocks for Howard Miller. They were simply identified by model numbers such as “Clock 4755” (Ball Clock), “Clock 2238” (Eye Clock), “Clock 2202” (Sunburst Clock) and so forth. There were different color options available for most designs. All clocks were powered by electricity. George Nelson Associates design clocks are no longer in production by Howard Miller, except one: “625-333 Ball Clock,” adaptation of a classic Ball Clock. The 625-333 Ball Clock is slightly bigger (14” diameter) than the original Ball Clock (13” diameter). The 625-33 Ball Clock only comes in one color, brushed nickel center and 12 black satin balls on nickel finished rods.

Many of the designs of George Nelson clocks (licensed reproductions) are currently available through Vitra. Headquartered in Switzerland, Vitra manufactures furniture and home accessories designed by iconic mid century modern designers such as Charles & Ray Eames and George Nelson. If you are looking for a vintage George Nelson clock, check online auction such as eBay or online market place/classifieds such as Lushpad or Craigslist. If you are lucky, you may find one at an estate sale, a yard sale, etc. George Nelson Vitra Clocks are widely available at many retailers. There are many knock-offs out there as well, so be aware!

Those who ever wanted the Hang-It-All in different color scheme, here is a good news. On August 15, 2010, Eames Hang-It-All is available with black welded-steel frame and solid walnut balls for $249. This edition of Hang-It-All is a part of “Herman Miller Select,” a once-a-year limited edition release. This year’s Denver Modernism Show features a special guest MC, Charles Phoenix, America’s favorite Histo-Tainer. He is back with a new retro slide show and more. There are some new events at this year’s show including Miss Modernism Pageant and Vintage Voltage Expo. There is also the 2010 Arapahoe Acres Home & Garden Tour in conjunction with the show on August 28, 2010. Tour participant are invited to tour eight to twelve homes and gardens throughout south Denver’s historic mid century modern neighborhood between 1pm and 5pm. The tour costs $20. Tour tickets will be available at the Denver Modernism Show on Friday, August 27, 2010 and the morning of the tour (August 28, 2010).

My criteria for the perfect desk was: 1) clean, modern lines; 2) at least one drawer, 3) a surface area that can accommodate my laptop and external monitor; 4) less than $500; and 5) eco-friendly. I decided to go with mid century modern “inspired” desk and found this one from West Elm. It’s called “Pratt Desk.”

To my surprise, the Pratt Desk meets all of my five criteria. This desk with clean, modern lines measures 48” (width) by 30” (depth) and has a white powder-coated steel storage drawer. The desktop and legs feature FSC certified materials. It is priced at $299. There are two color choices: walnut/white and white. I ordered the walnut/white one.

It is a part of the Pratt home office collection that also includes a file cabinet, chair, an LED lamp, and wall accessories. Kudos to the design team for designing such a stylish and eco-friendly collection!

Their wallpapers are handprinted by the silk screen method. They are sold by the single roll and each roll contains 30 sq. ft. (roll dimensions: 27″ x 15′). The Sacramento Mid-Century Modern Home Tour will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2010, showcasing 15 mid century modern residential and commercial buildings built between 1945 and 1970 in the South Land Park and adjacent neighborhoods of Sacramento. Tour participants are invited to visit the interior spaces of structures designed by architects and designers including: Jones + Emmons for Eichler Homes, Carter Sparks, Donald Thaden, George Muraki, designer George W. Haggett, designer Robert N. Hill, Rickey + Brooks, Bucky H. Fong, Herbert Y. Niiya, Albert Dreyfuss, Sooky Lee, Dean Unger, Harry J. Devine, Grant Caywood, and William Koblik.

In order to join the Sacramento Mid-Century Modern Home Tour, you will need to register at the Sacramento Executive Airport, a wonderful mid century modern building designed by renown Sacramento architect Leonard F. Starks. There will also be mid century modern related interpretive materials on display at this location. So be sure to check them out!

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Shorter Center South, who provides classes in a studio setting, taught by artists working in their own disciplines, for people with developmental disabilities.

What: Sacramento Mid-Century Modern Home Tour

When: Saturday, June 26, 2010 – Registration begins at 9:00 am at the Sacramento Executive Airport at 6151 Freeport Boulevard. Participants will receive tour guidebooks upon check-in. Homes will be open to visitors from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Where: The Land Park and South Land Park neighborhoods of Sacramento (easily accessible from the I-5, I-80, US-50, and CA-99).
