Last month I posted a review of a documentary film on Julius Shulman, “Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman.” Since then, two books on Julius Shulman were published: Julius Shulman: The Last Decade by Kehrer Verlag and Julius Shulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis by Sam Lubell and Douglas Woods (Rizzoli New York, 2011). I obtained a review copy of the latter (courtesy of Rizzoli New York) and would like to share what I thought of this beautifully bound book.

© Julius Shulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis by Sam Lubell
and Douglas Woods, Rizzoli New York, 2011.

Julius Shulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis presents a collection of photographic works of Los Angeles where Shulman lived and adored. Shulman beautifully documented the transformation of Los Angeles and its surrounding areas in the 1930’s, 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s through his lens. This book introduces images of Shulman’s lesser-known and never published before photographs of Los Angeles and its surroundings – many images in this book consist of photographs of factories, constructions sites, and commercial buildings.

© J. Paul Getty Trust, Julius Shulman Los Angeles: The Birth of a Modern Metropolis by Sam Lubell and Douglas Woods, Rizzoli New York, 2011. Mobil Gas Station, Smith and Williams, Anaheim, 1956.

The book consists of five chapters: City, Development, Houses, Living, and Work. The “City” chapter presents streets and buildings of downtown Los Angeles – many of the landmarks still exist today. In the “Development” chapter, Shulman documented how the area’s unspoiled landscape and farmland transformed into commercial centers, freeways, and residential developments. The “Houses” section, you see modernist and other styles of houses by both well-known and lesser-known architects. Everyday lives of people in Los Angeles in the 1930’s to 1960’s are seen in the “Lives” chapter. The “Work” chapter presents post-World War II Los Angeles and America at large. You can see the images of both the industry buildings and its workers in offices, construction sites and factory assembly lines.

© J. Drive-in dining at the Googie-style Tiny Naylors, designed by Douglas Honnold at Sunset and La Brea in Hollywood, 1952.

When I hear Shulman’s name, I tend to focus on his most published images featuring the mid-century modernism architecture such as Pierre Koenig’s Case Study House No. 22, Richard Neutra’s Kaufman House, John Lautner’s Chemosphere, etc. In this book, I was introduced another side of his work – lesser known, but equally remarkable.

It wasn’t until May of 2009 that I truly started to appreciate the work of Julius Shulman. I’d seen his work and thought it was amazing before then, but I didn’t bother to research or buy any of his books – I know… shame on me! In May of 2009, I joined a bus tour called Oklahoma Modernism Architecture Tour featuring five Oklahoma City area modern buildings that Julius Shulman photographed during the years he worked in Oklahoma. The tour was hosted by Oklahoma City Museum of Art which also had organized the exhibit called “Julius Shulman: Oklahoma Modernism Rediscovered,” featuring over 65 images taken in Oklahoma. Soon after the tour, I started to search out his books and other media to learn more about the legendary architectural photographer.

Whether you are an expert on Julius Shulman or fairly new to his work, a documentary film directed by Eric Bricker, “Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman” is a great medium to explore the life and work of Julius Shulman. This 83-minute documentary discusses the role of Shulman’s images in introducing modern architecture to the general public and helping to shape the careers of influential 20th century architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. This film is not only a great source to learn Shulman’s career, but also a delightful portrayal of Julius Shulman – warm, witty and charming gentleman. Julius Shulman was 98 years old by the end of the filming of Visual Acoustics. Although Shulman stopped doing photography assignments in 1986, he remained active up until his passing away in July of 2009 through publications, exhibits and lectures.

The film is available now on DVD. The film won awards at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, Newport Beach Film Festival, and the Lone Star International Film Festival. It is a must see for any mid-century modern design/architecture fans as well as architectural photography enthusiasts. As a mid-century modern fan/photography enthusiast, I enjoyed this film very much.

My first encounter with Ricahrd Neutra’s architecture was the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs, California. My husband and I made a day trip to Palm Springs while visiting his grandparents in Long Beach. Only a several hours to spare, the Kaufman House was to me the “must-see” place among all the great things in Palm Springs. I could only see the place from the street, but I was very impressed with its looks. I wanted to know more about the work of Richard Neutra – I thought “Neutra” by Barbara Lamprecht was a perfect place to start for a novice like me.

The Kaufmann House by Richard Neutra

Born and raised in Vienna, Richard Neutra (1872-1970) emigrated to the United States in 1932 and settled in California. The “Neutra” book introduces the background and view of the architect, then features 22 works of Richard Neutra selected from thoughout his long career. A presentation of each work includes an overview of his work, floor plans, and photographs (mostly black and white). Although the descrptions for these works may not be in depth, they are written concisely. For a novice like me, the amount of text and graphics are just adequate.

The book concludes with “Life and Work”, a map of California, Bibliography and Credits. A wealth of information is included in this economically priced book. The book is a part of the TASCHEN 25th Anniversaty Edition series.

About the Authour (from the publisher):
Barbara Lamprecht writes and teaches architectural history, concentrating on Modernism, and practices architecture, specializing in sustainability and small spaces. She contributes to Dwell, The Architectural Review, Architecture, Architectural Record and Fine Homebuilding. She is also the author of TASCHEN’s Neutra: Complete Works.

While some photos are identified in captions (these sites also are mentioned at the end of the book with location information), many photos do not include any information. I have visited Palm Springs, but I am far from being an expert. With my lack of knowledge, I could not identify many of the residential buildings in this book. However, I truly enjoyed these photos of unidentified structures, because these were the buildings I did not get to see while visiting Palm Springs.

Color or black/white, the images in this book are crisp and stunning. Even though these images were taken at present times, they have a “vintage feel” to them. Ms. Faibyshev also did a great job presenting distinctive architectural features of mid century modern buildings of Palm Springs in all of her images in this book. This book will be a treasure for any mid century modern enthusiast.

Bartlesville, Oklahoma is a small town with a population of approximately 35,000, located 45 miles north of Tulsa. The town embraces the rich, diverse heritage built by the oil industry. Bartlesville features attractions like Frank Lloyd Wright’s only skyscraper the Price Tower, Frank Phillips Home (founder of Phillips Petroleum) and Woolaroc Ranch, Museum & Wildlife Preserve. Bartlesville not only features the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, but also Bruce Goff – and that was exactly why I drove 200 miles to visit Bartlesville.

Bruce Goff (1904–1982) was an American architect, who spent most of his life practicing in Oklahoma, Illinois, and Texas. Goff designed numerous residences in the American Midwest as well as commercial and civic buildings. His remarkable style of organic architecture was influenced by a variety of sources, including the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan.

Bruce Goff's Green Glass Cullets

My first encounter with the architecture of Bruce Goff was the Bavinger House, the last stop of the Oklahoma Modernism Architecture Tour in May, 2009. The world renowned Bavinger House is considered to be one of the most significant designs of Bruce Goff. I was impressed with the Bavinger House so much that I wanted to visit other buildings by Bruce Goff. I have known that there were many buildings designed by Goff in Bartlesville, so I planned a mini self-guided tour of Bruce Goff architecture.

The Bavinger House in Norman, Oklahoma

Between 1956 and 1964, Bruce Goff set up his home and studio in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Price Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. So I thought it was appropriate to start my tour at the Price Tower. The Price Tower is the only realized skyscraper designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It was commissioned by Harold C. Price of the H. C. Price Company, a local oil pipeline construction firm. The 19 story tower was open to the public in 1956 – the tallest building in Bartlesville at the time. It was Bruce Goff who referred Harold C. Price to Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Price Tower by Frank Lloyd Wright

My next stop was the Redeemer Lutheran Church Education Building (1959). The two story rectangular building is located behind the main church building. The building is sheathed with stone and the same green glass cullets seen at the Bavinger House in Norman. It is located at 3700 SE Woodland Road, Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The tour of the building may be arranged by contacting the church office in advance.

There are two houses located just down the street from the church: Harold Jones House (1958) at 3411 SE Wildwood Court and Russell Collins House (1959) at 3400 SE Wildwood Court. Both of them are pretty much hidden behind the trees. Needless to say, these are private properties and you can only view them from the street.

I drove by two more houses: J.R. Akright House (1959) at 2412 SE Circle Drive and J.O. and Mary Motsenbocker House (1957) at 2416 SE Circle Drive.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1885" title="J.R.
I then drove a few miles north of Bartlesville to see C.A. Comer House (1957), located at 1316 N. Creek in Dewey, Oklahoma. This amazing house stands out on an quite neighborhood filled with ordinary houses.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1890" title="C.A.
There are few more structures designed by Bruce Goff (that I didn’t get to see) in Bartlesville:
Play Tower (1963) at Sooner Park
Robert White House (1958) at 1525 SW Whiteway Court
James Fitchette House (1961) at 1900 SE Saturn Court
Richard Bennett House (1959) at 2841 Silver Lake Road

The details of the structures mentioned here are listed in the Bruce Goff Oklahoma Guide published by Friends of Kebyar. If you are interested in visiting Bruce Goff’s buildings in Oklahoma, I recommend you pick up a copy. If you are visiting any of these properties, please remember to respect the privacy of the owners.
