Earlier this year, my friend Jennifer brought me a surprise gift. It was a poster of Cathrineholm enamelware that I had been eyeing on Etsy. I have never mentioned about the poster to her, so it was a quite surprise. I first saw the poster on Flickr and found that it was for sale on Etsy by Jan Skácelík. I immediately put it on my “Things to Buy Someday” list.

Cathrineholm by Jan Skácelík

Why someday? I probably mentioned this before – even though I blog about mid-century modernism, I do not own a true mid-century modern ranch home. My husband and I didn’t plan to live here forever, so we bought a house that suited our needs at that time – but, now that I already have the Cathrineholm poster, I decided I would update my current kitchen around it.

Things need to be updated in my kitchen are: 1) coffee maker stand (?), 2) dining table and chairs, 3) curtains and 4) lighting – I am leaving the kitchen cabinets/hardware and counter top “as is.” They were already updated to some degree when we bought the house. No reason to spend a lot of money on something we cannot take with us when we move.

Our coffee maker and toaster sit on the hand-me-down microwave cart. The cart also holds many junks behind the doors. The top surface has water damage. There is nothing really I can do to update this ugly thing – but what can be a good replacement? I need something that fits in the space and hold those junks (36” wide or less).

Before - How embarrassing...

I came across a custom made (that’s what the lady of the house said – not a professional quality) TV stand at a yard sale . The legs gave the stand a nice “retro” look, so I thought I’d give it a try. It was only 10 dollars, so why not…

After

I moved the toaster to the kitchen counter and displayed the Cathrineholm plate instead. I am still working on the little cubby part. I like this a lot better than the old microwave cart. One update done, four more to go!

One of the best rewards of having a mid-century modern blog is receiving emails from individuals asking to be featured on my blog. Not only is it a great honor, but also a great “find” of whatever (artist, product, company, etc.) I am asked to feature – otherwise I may miss its existence. So needless to say, I was very flattered when I received an email from Michael Murphy, a San Francisco based architect/graphic artist.

Why Wait by Michael Murphy

Michael Murphy’s art features architectural illustrations with a touch of mid-century modern design. In his interview with Londonist, he describes his style as “the style is my interpretation of traditional architectural illustration with a great attempt to present the potential drama within all good design. The viewpoints are meant to be as cinematic as possible yet as an architect I still have the urge to retain some semblance of reality in terms of perspective and structure.”

Privacy Screen by Michael Murphy

I like how architecture featured in his illustrations seem traditional mid-century modern inspired buildings, yet they are futuristic – somewhat nostalgic, but modern and futuristic. The mixture of past, present and future seem perfectly natural in his work.

Desert Oasis by Michael Murphy

Michael’s work is enjoyed by many audiences around the world. His work has been exhibited at galleries in San Francisco, London, Valencia, Amsterdam and Tokyo. Visit and view more of Michael’s work at www.supersonic.designinblue.com.

George Perrouʼs art is inspired by mid-century animation, and gives nods to Miro, Kandinsky and Calder.

Designer Todd Oldham’s book Handmade Modern has been a great source for me when it comes to mid century modern inspired DIY projects. Even if I am not planning on making anything, I like to flip through the pages time to time. Handmade Modern came out in 2005 and I had been wondering if he was going to introduce us with some new DIY craft ideas – he did, this time for kids. Kid Made Modern, a new book by Todd Oldham is filled with a wide variety of kid friendly art and craft projects inspired by mid century modern design.

Kid Made Modern by Todd Oldham

The 192 page book features 52 fun and easy-to-follow projects inspired by many iconic mid century modern designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, and Alexander Girard. This book is perfect for any school age children with all skill levels. Some are simple enough for kids to do by themselves and some are fairly challenging that require adults’ assistance. All projects have easy to follow instructions and appropriate photographs. Most of projects can be done with inexpensive supplies and/or ordinary household materials.

Fort of Cards Project

Kid Made Modern is not only a creative craft book, but also a great educational tool. The book introduces youngsters to art and design by integrating sections called the “All About” pages that explains the fundamentals of art media and techniques. There are sections on mid century modern designers that inspired the craft projects as well. If you are a parent, this book will provide hours of creative fun for your child. If a project is too complicated for your child, why not join your child? It will be a good bonding experience for you and your child.

Learn about Designers

Todd Oldham has successfully introduced the readers a concept that good design was for everyone by coming up with brilliant mid century modern inspired DIY books for both adults and kids: Handmade Modern and Kid Made Modern – what’s next? I have five dogs and two cats, so I’d like to see a DIY book dedicated for pet stuff. Call it “Pet Made Modern” – what do you think?

I recently updated my front porch and was in a market for a mid century modern inspired decorative art of some sort for my porch wall. I was flipping through the pages of Atomic Ranch magazine and found an ad for Steve Cambronne’s metal art sculpture. I visited his website and found many fantastic mid century modern, retro, googie inspired metal art sculptures featuring many colors and shapes such as boomerang, sputnik and circle. I ordered a welcome art sculpture shown above. Steve was showing the piece at art shows in Louisville and Cleveland, so he saved it for me. The item arrived promptly as promised after he got back from the show in Cleveland. I loved it very very much.

Steve offers many different types of metal art sculptures such as clocks, welcome art, kitchen art, and bar art. If you find the sculpture that is not in the right dimensions or colors, he can design your a sculpture to fit your needs. All shapes are individual overlaid pieces of steel to create multi-dimensional metal art sculpture. His design is very original and the craftsmanship is high quality. Steve also does commercial work like business metal signs/logos and school mascot logos. Check out the entire selection of Steve’s sculptures at www.stevecambronne.com.
