They are linked with being a risk factor for dogs getting a horrible and deadly disease called Gastric dilatation and volvulus, commonly called "Bloat." They used to believe that large breed, deep chested dogs (esp great danes, shephards, etc) should be fed from an elevated bowl. They found that these dogs had a greater chance of bloating if they were fed from a raised bowl. The only dogs that should be fed from an elevated bowl are those that have megaesophagus. As an emergency vet, I deal with this disease regularly. It is not pretty.
